Boost Your Internet Speed

Quick tips to get the most from your connection

📡

Optimize Router Placement

Place your router in a central, elevated location away from walls and metal objects for the strongest signal.

📶

Use 5GHz WiFi Band

Switch to the 5GHz band for faster speeds with less interference, especially if you're close to your router.

🔌

Go Wired When Possible

Ethernet cables provide the fastest, most stable connection for gaming, streaming, and video calls.

🔄

Restart Your Router

A monthly restart clears cache, refreshes connections, and can resolve many common speed issues.

🛑

Close Background Apps

Downloads, updates, and streaming in the background can eat up your bandwidth without you knowing.

🔐

Update Router Firmware

Regular firmware updates improve security, fix bugs, and can boost your router's overall performance.

Everything you need to know about speed testing

Instant Speed Test measures your internet connection speed using Cloudflare's global network. When you hit start, it connects to the nearest Cloudflare server and tests your download speed, upload speed, ping, and jitter — all within seconds. No app downloads, no sign-ups, just open and test.

Yes, completely free. No account needed, no hidden fees, no ads. Just visit the site and test your speed as many times as you want.

Cloudflare runs servers in over 300 cities worldwide. This means your test connects to a server physically close to you, giving you more accurate real-world results instead of testing against one faraway server.

Download speed is how fast you can receive data like loading websites and streaming video. Upload speed is how fast you can send data like video calls and uploading files. Ping is the response time between your device and the server — lower means faster response. Jitter measures how much your ping fluctuates — lower means a more stable connection.

For most people, 50–100 Mbps download handles everything comfortably. 25 Mbps is enough for 4K streaming on a single device. A ping under 50ms is solid, and jitter under 30ms means your connection is stable. If you're a heavy user or have many devices, aim for 200 Mbps or more.

Several things can reduce your actual speed — Wi-Fi interference, being far from your router, outdated router hardware, too many devices connected at once, or network congestion during peak hours. Your ISP advertises maximum speeds based on a wired connection under ideal conditions, which rarely matches real-world usage.

For casual gaming, 10–25 Mbps download with a ping under 50ms works fine. For competitive gaming, you want ping under 20ms for the fastest response time. Keep in mind that your ping on Instant Speed Test is measured against Cloudflare's servers — in-game ping depends on the game's server location, so it may be higher or lower than what you see here. The result gives you a reliable baseline of how responsive your connection is overall.

A single 4K stream needs at least 25 Mbps download speed. If two people are streaming 4K at the same time, you need around 50 Mbps. Add more devices and the number keeps going up. A stable connection with low jitter matters just as much as raw speed to avoid buffering.

For a smooth HD video call, you need 3–4 Mbps upload speed. For group calls with multiple participants or screen sharing, 10–15 Mbps upload is recommended. Upload speed matters more than download for video calls since you're constantly sending your video feed to others.

Internet speed is not a fixed number. It changes based on network congestion, time of day, how many devices are using your connection, and server load. This is completely normal. Run a few tests at different times throughout the day to get a clear picture of your average speed.

Start with the easy fixes — connect to your router with an Ethernet cable instead of Wi-Fi, restart your router, and close apps running in the background. Move your router to a central open spot in your home. If your router is more than 3–4 years old, upgrading it can make a big difference. Test during off-peak hours to see if congestion from your ISP is the issue.

Ethernet gives the most accurate result because there's no signal loss or interference. Wi-Fi speeds are always lower due to walls, distance, and other devices. Test on both — if your Ethernet result is much faster than Wi-Fi, the issue is your wireless setup, not your internet plan.
